Silicon Carbide Coating on Quartz Glass - Plasma Sprayed SiC

Silicon Carbide Coating on Quartz Glass - Plasma Sprayed SiC

Protecting Quartz Glass in Extreme Service

Quartz glass offers outstanding optical and chemical properties, but softens at high temperature and has limited mechanical strength. A plasma sprayed silicon carbide layer overcomes both weaknesses, extending the working range and life of quartz components.

Coating Benefits

  • SiC melting point about 2800 C - dramatically better high-temperature stability
  • Hardness above HRC 90 for strong abrasion resistance
  • Resistant to most acids and alkalis
  • Reinforced overall mechanical strength

Process Flow

  • Surface cleaning and controlled roughening for adhesion
  • Pre-heating to improve bonding
  • Plasma (or flame/arc) spraying of SiC powder
  • Controlled cooling and solidification
  • Non-destructive inspection of quality and thickness before delivery
