Arc Spraying a Paper Machine Dryer Cylinder

Twin-wire arc spraying is the most economical way to rebuild and protect very large cylinders. Two metal wires are fed into the arc, melted and blown onto the rotating cylinder by compressed air. Because the process is fast, it can cover the large surface area of a dryer cylinder in a reasonable time.

For paper machine cylinders we normally work with stainless steel or aluminium bronze wire, depending on whether the customer needs corrosion resistance, a specific hardness, or better release from the wet web. The cylinder is grit blasted first, sprayed, and then ground and polished back to the required diameter and surface finish.

We handle cylinders up to several metres in length both in our own workshop and on site.
